Tarindra Kaluperuma of Stafford Motor Co., in his maiden appearance at a Snooker tournament, came from behind to defeat Sandun Wijeratne of Hayleys Group, by 2 Frames to 1, to win the MCA Open Snooker Championship 2009, in the final played at the MCA Billiards & Snooker Room.
Kaluperuma, who went down fighting in the 1st Frame (36/45), made a determined effort in the 2nd Frame and equalised (43/20).
Wijeratne now somewhat rattled by Kaluperuma’s cool and calculated play, lost the 3rd and Final Frame without a fight and conceded the match at 33/64.
There were 12 players pooled into 4 Groups of 3 each. At the completion of the Round–Robin stage, former winner, Milinda Mallikarachchi (Group ‘A’), Nadun Wijeratne (Group ‘B’), Tarindra Kaluperuma (Group ‘C’) and former winner, Chaminda Madanayake (Group ‘D’) advanced to the Semifinals, as Group winners.
In the Semifinals, Sandun Wijeratne beat Milinda Mallikarachchi (81/23, 25/57, 56/55), while Tarindra Kaluperuma beat Chaminda Madanayake (91/12, 60/46).
