Architect Ismeth Raheem’s penchant for the work of Julia Margaret Cameron, the great 19th Century portraitist, runs back to the days when he researched on early photography and Ceylon. Fascinated by her Ceylon years (the last of her life) spent in remote tea plantations with husband Charles Hay Cameron, Ismeth has traveled to the Isle of Wight, her previous home for many years, and other places connected with her life. With Dr. Martin Pieris, photographer, Ismeth has done a short film on those years, titled From the Isle of Wight to Ceylon, to be premiered at the Lionel Wendt on 9 September. The Sunday Times Magazine on 28th August carries a long feature on Ismeth and Martin’s endeavour and the saga of Julia’s life; especially her evanescent years in the colonial Victorian island.
