The customary events tied up with the April season would be held this year as well in Nuwara Eliya. The much talked about and unique Flower Show ‘April Blooms’ would be held as usual, with the Horse Races, Mahagastota Hill Climb, Radella Hill Climb, Mountain bike and Motor Cross to name a few thrilling events.
As there are many holidays falling during this April season, most of the Management of hotels and guest houses are of the view that there would be well over 6- 8 days of holiday revelers in the city.
The most reputed and nationally acclaimed heritage Hotel in the mountain Capital ‘Grand Hotel’ has made a policy decision not to increase their room rates for the season this year.
‘This would be good news to all those holiday lovers who are contemplating on a holiday in Nuwara Eliya. The rationale of not increasing the rates (by way of supplement) is purely due to the present economic turbulence faced globally which is now beginning to have a spill over effect on Sri Lanka as well’ said Raju Veerasingham, the Resident Manager of the Grand.
The Management of the Grand Hotel is of the view that they should accommodate the loyal guests who have been patronizing the Hotel right through the years with the same or may be increased hospitality sans any extra burden on the guests.
A walk in the garden of Grand Hotel, which won the Award for the Best Commercial Large Garden Competition for 17 consecutive years should not be missed. The landscaping is novel and is changed every year.
The Grand Hotel has also organized the ‘Grand 10 to 10 Garden Food Fiesta’ on the outskirts of the hotel premises which would serve the traditional Sri Lankan plate of kottu, hoppers with some Grand specialties like ‘Grand Fish N Chips’ ‘Grand-Burger’, Ice Cream Smoothies, Cool Shakes to name a few. ‘The Specialty Grand Indian Restaurant which draws vast crowds would have a special buffet lunch and a delectable Sahan take-aways too’ he added.
A new addition to the festivity programme lined up at Grand Hotel would be celebrating of the dawn of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year with the traditional trimmings of raban playing, Avurudu Games, etc. The Grand Lawn would definitely be a hub of activities on April 14.

Also Grand Hotel is organizing a national level Snooker ‘Knock Out’ Tournament on April 17 and 18 after a lapse of two years and expects to draw-in most of the national level players. |
