The John Keells Social Responsibility Foundation recently conducted an eye camp for the people in the village of Horadorowwa, 190 km away from Colombo, in the Uva province.
The main objective of the project is to help less fortunate people in the most remote parts of the country affected by cataract regain their vision, which will in turn provide them opportunity to lead a normal life, according to foundation officials.

The camp which was mainly a community organized event was held at the Horadorowwa Sri Jinarathana Vidyalaya, Haputale and had a total attendance of 164 villagers both from the local village as well as surrounding villages such as Rathkarawwa, Kahagolla and Idalgashinna all of whom had problems with their eyesight and who was in desperate need of support, something which these “forgotten” people needed. Supporting the project was the Consultant Eye Surgeon of the Nuwara Eliya general hospital, Dr. Priyanga Iddawela and his team.
Dr. Iddawela recognized the value of the assistance provided by the John Keells Group towards the Vision 2000 initiative across the country for less fortunate people as the benefits enabling people to lead a normal life cannot be completely described.
A total of 34 patients of varying ages were selected to undergo cataract operations at the camp. All financial assistance towards these operations is provided by the John Keells Social Responsibility Foundation as part of the project. The operations were to take place on the Nov 25 and 27 at the Nuwara Eliya General Hospital.
