The British Council premises in Kandy was the setting for the Final of the British Council/ Mobitel Grammar Quest 2009 on Monday November 2, 2009. The audience was filled to capacity with principals, teachers, parents and cheering squads from the four finalists, namely; Pushpadana Girls College Kandy, Royal International School, Kurunegala, St. Anthony’s Girls’ College, Kandy and Royal English School, Matale.
The Country Director of British Council, Sri Lanka, Gill Westaway, opening proceedings, mentioned the importance of the use of correct English grammar and the role played by the British Council in the past 6 decades in Sri Lanka.
Romesh John, Regional Manager Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, the sponsor of the event, then conducted a presentation on their broad band facility. The competition opened with the Branch Manager British Council, Kandy Nick Kendall, as the quiz master. The contestants faced the competition with confidence and it was a keenly contested final. In between rounds, the contestants were asked for their comments on the competition and why they decided to take part. The responses varied from “to improve our knowledge in English” to “to have fun and enjoy ourselves.”
At the end of five rounds comprising, Scrambled Sentences, Grammar Trivia, Clever changes, MCQ’s and against the clock, Royal International School, Kurunegala were declared winners of the British Council/ Mobitel Grammar Quest 2009. The team comprised of Sheron De Silva, Upulangani Chandrasekara, J. Chathurika Ekanayake and Sajith H. Pallemulla
Mrs. L Egodawela, the principal of Pushpadana girls’ college, too shared her views on the importance of competitions of this nature and the need to continue them annually.
All the contestants received certificates of participation, while the winners and the runners up were awarded trophies in addition to individual gift vouchers, at the awards ceremony.
