One of Sri Lanka’s most popular contemporary Sinhala plays ‘Weeraya Merila’ (The Hero is Dead), written and directed by renowned dramatist Rajitha Dissanayake will be staged at the Elphinstone theatre on Thursday, November 12 at 3.30 pm and 6.30 pm.
The drama, which was produced in 2002 is a subtle hint on the current socio-political situation and won a number of awards including Best Drama, Best Director, Best Script, Best Choreography and Best Lighting at the State Drama Festival that year.
The cast comprising some of the well-known stage stars is comprised of Priyankara Ratnayake, Jayani Senanayake, Dayadewa Edirisinghe, Prasad Sooriyarachchi, Dharmapriya Dias, Gihan Fernando, Shyam Fernando, Nilmini Buwaneka, Sampath Jayaweera, Saman Malalasekera and Gihan de Chickera.
The play has been performed extensively throughout the country and won many prestigious awards.
At the 2002 State Drama Festival ‘Weeraya Merila’ bagged the top awards.
Rajitha Dissanayake is also known for his plays ‘Sihina Horu Aran’ and most recently ‘Apahu Herenna Behe’.
Music for ‘Weeraya Merila’ is composed by Kapila Poogalarachchi while the set design is by Sujith Ratnayake. Priyantha Dissanayake is handling the make-up and lighting is by Ranga Samarakoon. The costume designer is Priyantha Sin Kumara, Malith Peiris is the Stage Manager and the chief organizer of the event is Jude Srimal.
