Santé which means ‘good health’ in French is the inspiration for this health food café. Situated on Jawatte Avenue, Colombo 5, this is different from Colombo’s other eateries with their plethora of pastries, Chinese rolls and gooey desserts. With a tagline of ‘A taste of good health’, Café Santé strives to serve fresh food hygienically prepared and made according to the preferences of health-food addicts.
Café Santé opened its doors to customers in late September together with the Body Bar Gym formerly known as the Global Fitness Centre. Serving health food to people who frequent the gym, the cafe features a popular roast chicken sandwich, fresh carrot juice and energy bars on its menu. Customers can also tuck into sandwiches with either a hummus or tuna filling or have them made with brown or white bread.
Other items on the menu include a yummy low fat smoothie which is available in banana and mango, flavoured teas and a spicy bhel puri. Oat-based energy bars filled with dates, raisins and nuts are available for people who seek a quick and healthy breakfast on the go, priced at an affordable Rs.150. Sandwiches and their signature carrot juice are priced at Rs.130 respectively while soups are also served.
“It has always been a dream of mine to venture into health food,” said Café Santé’s manager Ruani Wickramasekera who says that focusing on Halal food is a priority; neither beef nor pork is on the menu.
Other healthy options are low fat ice cream coupled with fruit salad as a healthy dessert. Beverages include a milkshake made with low fat ice cream and various fruit juices.
And come December they plan to include seafood pastas, fruit muffins, waffles and Christmas cake. The café undertakes orders for various events and the made to order menu includes biriyani, baked crab, short-eats, lamprais etc. Café Santé is open early for those who start their day with the birds- from 7 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and also on Poya days and public holidays.
