The Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka will once again celebrate the season with its Family Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 13 at 7 p.m. at the BMICH, in a tuneful and joyous programme conducted by versatile young conductor Eshantha J. Peiris.
Highlights of the programme include Jacques Offenbach’s Overture to ‘Orpheus in the Underworld’ and Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” Suite.
There will be seasonal favourites for choir, orchestra and audience. Christmas music includes ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town,’ ‘Christmas Time is here’ and Sleigh Ride’, which will be presented in big band jazz arrangements.
Other seasonal music, ‘Joyful, joyful’, ‘Let it Snow’ and ‘Have yourself a merry little Christmas’ will culminate in the Gospel version of Handel’s powerful ‘Hallelujah’ chorus.
The sing-along includes such childhood favourites as ‘Silver Bells’ and ‘Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer’ and such perennial carols as ‘Away in a Manger’ and ‘Joy to the World’. Charin Mendis and Sheranga Perera are the vocal soloists, both highly talented jazz singers who are presently receiving advanced vocal training in Singapore. Choirs are the Old Joes Choir and Contempo.
German-born French composer Offenbach’s operetta Orphée aux enfers, is a hilarious satirical retelling of the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. The Overture features the famous ‘Can can’ theme in its conclusion.
