‘The miracle of Christmas’

Focusing on the Christmas, the most significant event celebrated around during the month of December, Christmas movie, ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ will be screened at 6.00 pm on Tuesday, December 8 at the American Centre.

Directed by George Seaton and starring Maureen O’Hara, John Payne, Natalie Wood and Edmund Gwenn, the movie tells the the story of what takes place in New York City following Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, as people are left wondering whether or not a department store Santa might be the real thing.

Doris Walker a no-nonsense Macy’s executive, desperately searches for a new store Santa. She hires Kris Kringle who insists that he’s the real Santa Claus. But, he has many skeptics like Doris and her six year old daughter, Susan. So Kris goes to court to try and prove it. Is he the real Santa Claus?

The film won Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Edmund Gwenn), Best Writing, Original Story (Valentine Davies) and Best Writing, Screenplay. It was also nominated for Best Picture, losing to Gentleman’s Agreement.

Davies also penned a short novella version of the tale, which was published by Harcourt Brace simultaneously with the film’s release.
