Sri Lankan Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) Interim Committee Chairman, Dr. Maiya Gunasekera expressed optimism over the prospect of school leaving rugby players remaining in the country now that the island was in a post conflict phase.
Dr. Maiya Gunasekera, Chairman of the SLRFU Interim Committee and Hemaka Amarasuriya looks on as Kingswood College is presented with the award for the Division I Group A 2008 Championship. |
Dr. Gunasekera revealed this and further expectations for the growth of local rugby at an event which was both an awards ceremony for the 2008 school rugby season as well as the media launch for the new season which is to be sponsored by Singer.
Dr. Gunasekera said that previously most of the leading school ruggerites had remained in the country due to the fact that most students felt the local universities met their educational requirements. However in recent times these students had ventured abroad to pursue their studies and as a result the country was being deprived of a wealth of potential talent.
He is confident though that the changing social and economic climate of the country will curb this trend and shepherd most of the school talent into the local rugby clubs.
The list of winners at the awards ceremony included Kingswood College Kandy, St. Joseph’s College Colombo, Zahira College Colombo, Royal College Panadura, S. Thomas’ College Matara, Maliyadeva College Kurunegala, and Hindu College Colombo.
