The Aviation Industry Training Centre (AITC) at Kangan Institute offers facilities to deliver accredited courses and tailored training to suit the needs of individuals and industry to the domestic and international markets within the Asia-Pacific region.
It is the only Victorian CASA CAR30 & CAO100.66 approved Training Centre, making it Australia's largest purpose-built training facility for the Aviation Industry and was officially opened by Deputy Prime Minister of Australia in August 1994. The current centre covers 8,500 square metres over three levels of which 1,450 square metres is a fully functional hangar at the Broadmeadows campus of Kangan Institute. With funding provided by the state government, Kangan Institute purchased a Boeing 737 in late-2008 to be used as a dedicated training aid. A range of industry representatives and influential aviation companies were consulted throughout the purchasing process to determine which aircraft type would best meet the training needs of the aviation industry in Australia.
A modern aviation training centre is pivotal to increasing the global competitiveness of the Victorian and Australian aviation industry and supporting the changing trends shaping the industry over the next 10 years. This concept is critical for developing capability, enabling increased innovation, more integrated approach to training and R&D, highly skilled staff, flexible, centralised training and ongoing professional development. Kangan Institute has worked very closely with industry partners (Qantas, John Holland Aviation Services, Virgin Tech) to develop the AITC concept.
The AITC was designed to respond to the challenges facing Victoria in maintaining competitiveness as a base for existing and prospective aircraft maintenance activities. Kangan Institute, as the principal Victorian provider of skills development to the industry parties, has a specific need to develop comprehensive practical training and education equipment and facilities at Melbourne Airport to optimally impact on the Victorian economy and community. The key to providing a full aviation training service is the requirement to have up-to-date staff, course materials, practical devices, simulation programmes and modern facilities.
In recent years, the AITC was unable to fully deliver practical training to complement the theoretical training and the purchase of a Boeing 737 and the recent granting of Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) approval now mean that we can deliver end-to-end training with the one location. This makes Victoria more attractive to the aviation maintenance industry both locally, nationally and internationally. Industry has always identified the supply and availability of a skilled workforce as a key requirement for their engagement in any location.
Training outcomes are aligned to new national and international licensing standards, including the requirements of the new CAO100.66 using state-of-the-art presentations, a suite of instructional support materials and fully secured examination data base. This ensures the training outcomes offer the option for Australian aircraft maintenance personnel to obtain licences and ratings based on the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) categories - A, B1 and B2, and aircraft ratings for the new CAO100.66
The AITC has formed cooperation with Lufthansa Technical Training, the largest provider of MRO training in the world. This cooperation enables the AITC to offer a one-stop-shop to the Aviation Maintenance industry, basic through to advance aircraft type training. The training service covers several distinct areas of expertise including Avionics, Mechanical, and structures trade training, CAO100.66, conversion course, Advanced Composites, Aircraft Type-training and Aviation Security
Customers of the AITC include Qantas Airways, Airflite, Forstaff Aviation (Australia), BAE Systems, Boeing Hawker de Havilland, John Holland Aviation Services, Australian Defence Force, Virgin Tech, Heath Tecna PTY LTD, ROSEBANK Engineering.
