“Metisse” is a French comedy drawing the attention to the injustices and prejudices that mark by so-called civilized society.
Directed by Mathieu Kassowitz, the film stars Julie Mauduech, Hubert Kounde and Mathieu Kassovitz in the major three roles.
Lola, an attractive young half-caste, has two lovers. One is Jamal, rich, educated, the son of a diplomat, and black. The other is Félix, a white Jew from a deprived background, who scrapes a living as a bicycle courier. The two men meet when they are summoned to Lola’s apartment. They learn that Lola is pregnant, but she will not disclose which of them is the father. Unable to give up the woman they love, the two men must not only accept the situation. They must also accept each other…
Métisse , Kassovitz’s first full length film, uses comedy to draw our attention to the injustices and prejudices that mar our so-called civilised society. The director’s approach is strikingly fresh and original, and most notably quite unlike anything in French cinema at the time.
This film with English subtitles will be screened at 6.30 pm on Thursday July 15, 2010 at the Alliance Francaise de Kotte, 139 Jawatte Road, Colombo 05.
A movie from newspaper
The Diamond Arm, a Soviet comedy based on a newspaper item will be screened at 6 pm on July 14 at the Russian centre. Colombo 7.
Directed by Leonid Gaidai and starred several famous Soviet actors, including Yuri Nikulin, Andrei Mironov, Anatoli Papanov, Nonna Mordyukova and Svetlana Svetlichnaya the film revolves around the arrest on the Italian border of a criminal who had hidden “gold and diamonds” in the plaster cast.
A Soviet-era boss of shadow economy (referred to as “The Chief”) wants to smuggle a batch of jewellery into Russia by hiding it into the orthopedic cast of a courier. By a confusing accident the contraband lands into the cast of a broken arm of a “simple Soviet citizen” Semyon Semyonovich Gorbunkov. He lets the militsiya know about this, and the militsiya captain uses Gorbunkov as a bait to catch the criminals. Most of the plot are various attempts of the crooks to lure Gorbunkov into a position when they could have quietly, without a wet job, taken the cast off him.
The movie became the absolute box-office leader of 1969 and also one of the all-time leaders at the Soviet box office with over 76,700,000 theatre admissions in the Soviet era. The Diamond Arm has become a Russian cult film. |
