Lanka Tiles PLC (LWL), hit by a strike, is considering plans to import tiles, officials said.
On Thursday, workers went on strike over wage demands which could cost the company millions of rupees in lost production.
The strike continued on Friday. Of the 190 workers involved in this strike which is a sizable majority of the workforce, about 120 are entitled to payments linked to the Cost of Living Index (COLI). Others are entitled to a consolidated salary. Officials say that those under the COLI want a Rs 4,500 increase for the next three years while the rest want a Rs 8,000 hike for the same period.
“We’ve offered the first set a Rs 1,500 increase and the others an increase ranging from a minimum of Rs 4,750 and a maximum of Rs 5,750,” Mahendra Jayasekera, Managing Director LWL said, adding that the workers have rejected this offer.“Factory production is halted and the workers are saying that it’s an indefinite strike,” he said. |
