Heavy monsoonal showers have inconvenienced thousands of people arriving in Kandy to witness the historic Esala Perahera.
Rains have damaged the Kandy-Mahiyangana Road and several roads in the Teldeniya Police Division were blocked by fallen trees. Electricity in Teldeniya and Menikhinna areas was also interrupted.
The first Randoli Perahera which was due to start at 7.56 p.m. on Friday was delayed till 8.35 p.m. due to bad weather.
However good weather prevailed yesterday giving spectators an opportunity to enjoy the pageant.
President chief guest at Sittamgallena Raja Maha Viharaya Perahera
The Esala Randoli Perahera of the Sittamgallena Raja Maha Viharaya in the Walasmulla Divisional Secretariat area of Mulkirigala will take place on August 26, with President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the chief guest.
The Chief Basnayaka Nilame Kithsiri Ganganath Abeygunawardana said a Pirith ceremony will be held tonight followed by the first perahera on August 24.
The Esala festival is being held for the 43rd time. |
