Thousands of people travelling daily to Jaffna from Colombo find inadequate sanitary facilities at Puttalam, Anuradhapura, Rambewa and Mankulam where buses stop for passengers to ease themselves.
On a single day more than fifty buses head for the North during the night. Buses leave Colombo between 8 p.m and 10 p.m. and reach Jaffna Town at 6 a.m or 7 a.m. the next day.
Though male passengers somehow make use of the open spaces to ease themselves, female passengers have to face discomfort all the way to Jaffna due to the scarcity of toilets.
Most of the toilets in wayside hotels are not maintained and the smell of unwashed toilets pervades the atmosphere.
Most hotels have their toilets quite a distance away from the main building.
Often there is only one toilet which is available for women passengers. When it rains it becomes a nightmare as they have to walk through open muddy ground to reach the toilets.
With the increasing number of people travelling to Jaffna the authorities should find a remedy for this problem without delay, say regular travellers. |
