The rain the rain, how well it nourishes the earth. If only it would rain all night and tolerate the sun in its glory all day!!!
This would not hamper sports and instead encourages the green canopy to proliferate - a thought that fits perfectly with my ambition for this Sunday a small insight into what magical possibilities exist for our tropical future.
The magic has already started in Delhi, with our national team skipper Chitana picking up a Silver Medal, which he promised would be a repeat gold. The news is a wonderful shudder that will be felt with enormous pride, all over our rain washed land.Top feeling for his family, friends and village…...inspiration for the thousands who will soak in the flag hoist and podium smile.
I am particularly pleased for him, more so because his captaincy has set the bar for the team at the games, now let's sit back with that warm feeling till the next.
Good to see the elusive Shehan Ambeypitiya qualify up for the 100metre semi's, but unless he runs beyond his wildest dreams, a medal is as elusive given his form...the lad needs to beef up for sure and grow his calf, quads and shoulders,…..an eyeful for him if he looks right and left at the Jamaican and Nigerian brothers.
You need to see the body stature and impact form, to fully understand the nature of international sprinting, ask Susie about intense workload and sheer pounding...her knowledge is platinum for the likes of young Shehan, either way, good prospects , but tons of work to become a real contender.
On that note.....it is sad to see the big names, especially the Usain Bolt and the chicken brigade, staying away from the Delhi games.
The professional and the icon must sit lonely and bored, as his fellow countrymen run impressive and clock under 10secs on the way to what will be a scorching final. I am trying to find suitable insult for them….but alas this is read by kids ...so I shall hold my pencil???
Sri Lanka will be dreaming of more medals...and with due respect, will be absolutely rat all to do with luck…..as I hear millions wish them luck. I would like to ban that wish, and make people understand that luck comes from hard graft, and even harder work - it's the only way. Kids should be taught that, and given the defined yards.
Wish them FOCUS, wish them good health, wish them a better mind to deal with the pressure of intense competition, wish them a calm body clock ...and how to channel the nervous energy….etc....DO NOT WISH THEM LUCK UPFRONT. !!!!
I can see the tension …..So before you all jump up and down…..it's simple, practical thinking for sport…...it's the only way …..Accept it and remember the next time, as it requires thinking from the management team, family, supporters and friends - the closest to the athlete, the close circle that forms the trust team.
On a note of serious appreciation….well done to Reebok and their impressive Ambassadors, "The Blade" Mahela, and "Master blaster" Sanath Jayasuriya .what inspiration these lads have for the millions of kids who dream of what they have achieved.
Well done to Kaushalya at DSI and her team for the" fans meet their 'Hero'…….concept, that promises to charge up and buy heaps.
Thank you for also letting the cameras capture the full story for our Sportswatch episode on Art TV...lets look forward to many more fans getting that chance to photo up with the superstars…...accessibility is platinum - big hand to Reebok.
I do believe that it is a responsibility of corp Lanka, the blue chips, to reach out and make our sports future not just business, but also provide encouragement on several levels…..that is part of the magic,.
Island nations like ours can have huge impact if we can all join together for a common goal…..a goal that ensures the best opportunity for our competitive kids..the next generation of Arjuna, Aravinda, Vaas, Susanthika, Hisham , Anuruddha, Bolling, Darsha, Sriyani K and a host of champions whose stories are mythical magical statements born from hard work and pure passion.
This is platinum inspiration...An Olympic and World Mark Hall of Fame to document such history is timely and most appropriate for our path to glory.
As you read this , I will be barking instructions at my club , dressed up for another good story - this time one of Sri lanka's biggest blue chips, Brandix and a thousand two hundred of their staff out running in the true spirit of competition.
The list includes CEO Ashfoff, setting example from the top and providing amiable Nilangani De Silva and her team, plenty of logistical time slots, that demand careful attention…..to kick this off as the best Brandix sports fest ever?..
What a fabulous image for my country - the biggest companies, showing how important it is to play sport, and maintain the team spirit - that explains in no small measure the pillars of their success and ability to withstand the hardest of times.
The fitter we are, the harder we can push, the clearer the mind and ability to focus and achieve.
Cheers my sportizens, as always, remember the example must come from the top…...lead inspiration and courage by example. IT IS THE ONLY WAY.
