Mouthful of heavenly chocolate!

A spoonful of decadently rich and creamy chocolate mousse melting in your mouth is paradise itself. And where can you find yourself more than just a spoonful of paradise, you ask? Look no further than ‘Heavenly Desserts’. Rumoured to be the place for the best chocolate mousse, this grapevine hasn’t crept too far from the truth.

A bowl of ‘Rich Chocolate Mousse’ from Heavenly Desserts serves 10 and comes with a generous layer of smooth “chocolitious” mousse over a base of moist dark chocolate cake. Surprisingly, the disparate textures make a complementing blend that will have you yearning for more.

Chanika Mallawarachchi

While it’s best known for its extraordinary chocolate mousse, Heavenly Desserts can whip you up five more strictly chocolate desserts. These include Chocolate Meringue Gateaux, Chocolate Brownies with Chocolate Icing, Chocolate Cupcakes, Chocolate Log, and the latest addition to the menu- the Chocolate Mousse Cupcake. The culinarian or rather the goddess of ‘Heavenly Desserts’, Chanika Mallawarachchi (27) who works a fulltime job in public relations at Grants, has an innate talent for cooking.

Bustling around her spacious kitchen, Chanika gets to mixing and baking her orders as soon as she gets home from work. As many of us have tried making chocolate desserts at home, we know there’s no shortage of things that can go wrong when dealing with chocolate. But to Chanika, mixing up and baking a chocolate confection is a piece of cake. “Since I work, the only time I get to make the orders is when I get home. This is why I usually make desserts for dinners,” expresses Chanika, adding “I’d like people to have it when it’s freshly prepared.”

Having discovered her love for cooking soon after her school days at Bishops College, Chanika who is reposeful and mild-mannered by nature can be found cooking if not reading a book in her room. However, since she started up her small business two years ago, she hasn’t had much time for anything apart from the orders she receives. “There have been weeks during which all I’d be doing is making desserts when I get home from work,” she recalls. While we might find this tiring, Chanika says she loves every minute of it.

Her love for cooking extends beyond chocolate confections, but due to the demand for chocolate desserts in Sri Lanka Chanika has reserved her culinary skills to playing with chocolate. “Just about everyone in Sri Lanka loves chocolate,” she shares from her experiences. “If I tell my friends I’m bringing a ribbon cake they say- what! No, we want chocolate cake,” she adds with a smile.

While she selectively adds new desserts to the Heavenly Desserts menu, she says the chocolate cupcakes will be making an exit. Cupcakes have become exceedingly common in and around Colombo, and Chanika prefers to give her customers desserts that are out of the ordinary. In fact she hopes to prepare desserts that are suitable for diabetics sometime soon, if possible.

With the number of small business sprouting around Colombo, Heavenly Desserts has set the bar. Homemade chocolate desserts that are rich but far from sickly sweet, and of textures that will roll, ooze and crunch softly in your mouth, “are just a phone call away”.
