Everything that was promised by these columns when we informed you of an excellent evening’s entertainment materialized at the Ballroom of the Ceylon Continental Hotel last Friday night when the ‘Sing-a-Long’ organised by the Royal Commonwealth Society kicked off to a swinging start with unanimous participation in the songs that were called out from the bandstand.
During the first session, a panel of judges comprising of those with a keen ear for music and who were described by the charismatic Compere, Vijaya Corea, as CID (clarified by him as implying ‘Coming In Disguise’) went around and picked five tables that were found to be singing from their heart with clarity. These finalists were then called upon to step up to the bandstand and sing a song of their choice in order to vie for the prize that was to be awarded to the “Best Singing Table”. Just when the excitement was building up and the second Sing-A-Long session had ended, firebrand Anura Palihawadana, the Shadow star of Gypsies’ Sunil, entered the fray to the hand clapping, toe tapping and appreciation of the audience which gravitated to the dance floor instantly and most spontaneously.
Nalin and the Star Combination did brilliantly well to keep everyone happy throughout the evening and until past midnight as they sang and danced their cares away. The Compere was the catalyst displaying his professional excellence.
smiling all the way with prizes in their hands. Good food, good entertainment and an ambience that was radiant portrayed the success of the evening at the end of which the unanimous exclamation was, in the most positive sense, “What a night!” |
