International artist Mari Kohinoor Nordberg and her group from Norway along with Sri Lanka’s own Chris (C.J.) Dasan, the group’s percussionist, will perform here when Sewalanka Foundation together with Concerts Norway, Aru Sri Art Theatre and the Norwegian Embassy presents ‘Kohinoor, Live in Sri Lanka’.
Kohinoor was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh and came to Norway when she was three and a half years old. Her style is a mix of world music and Dance Hall while her connection with Rasta philosophy is also reflected in her music. Her debut album is named Kohi de Browny and much of the material is autobiographic in good old Hip Hop tradition. Her voice is raw and powerful and a personal engagement manifests when you listen to her.
The group will have public performances on November 6 at the Upali Wijayawardena Hall, Kamburupitiya at 5 p.m. and on the 12th at the Town Hall, Negombo at 7 p.m. In addition they will hold concerts and workshops for children and youth at the New Arts Theatre, Colombo University, Newstead Girls School, Negombo and in Matara. Entrance for all these concerts is free of charge.
The group will also hold a workshop for music groups at the Sanasa Hall, Matara on November 7 at 10 a.m. The workshop is free of charge and those interested can register by mailing rashani@sewalanka.org. The Matara workshop and the concerts are organized with the help of the Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena Foundation.
This is the sixth group of musicians touring Sri Lanka as part of a broader music cooperation established between Concerts Norway, the Norwegian Embassy, Aru Sri Art Theatre and Sewalanka Foundation. Norwegian Groups such as Ras Nas (reggae), The Indian Core (Jazz), Nils-Olav Johansen Quartet (Jazz), SISU (percussion) and Classical Evergreens (Opera) havetoured Sri Lanka
