More rain and thunder till New Year: Met Dept

The Meteorological Department yesterday warned of more thunder-showers in the evenings in all parts of country as heavy rains and floods over the past few weeks left more than 50,000 people displaced.
A spokesman for the department said thunder showers would continue till the New Year with the North-East Monsoon starting in mid-December.

“The rough wet weather will continue this week especially in the Northern, Eastern and Uva provinces with thunder showers in the evenings all over the country,” he said. The spokesman said the heavy rain was due to a disturbance in the upper atmosphere and a low pressure area that was moving westward towards India.

With heavy rain continuing, two sluice gates of the Victoria dam have been opened as have the gates of Dewahuwa Wewa, Wemedilla wewa and Kalawewa. Disaster Management Co-coordinator Pradeep Kodippili said nearly 56,000 people or 19,121 families were displaced by the heavy rain.

Two people were reported killed and eight injured in the floods while about 100 houses were totally destroyed and some 700 damaged. He said some 2,876 families were living in the 43 camps situated in six districts from the deep South to the central region and the northern Jaffna Peninsula.
