Kurunegala Heart Centre vandalised

By Pushpakumara Jayarathne

Valuable equipment used in by-pass operations at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital has been reported to have been stolen. According to the Kurunegala police, the equipment which was stored in the upper storey of the “Hada Suwa Medura” –the heart operation unit of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital— had been reported missing.

The equipment valued at around twenty-seven lakhs of rupees, was stored in a section of the building which is still under construction. The Kurunegala hospital is one of four hospitals in the island where specialised heart operations are performed and was set up with private and state funds.

Specialist doctor Thilak Sirisena said the loss of such vital equipment was extremely regrettable, while the director of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital described the robbery of these vital pieces of equipment as a crime against humanity.

Police suspect the robbery was an inside job. They pointed out that thieves had entered the building from the 5th floor and outsiders had no way of entering the building.
