Suspension bridge in danger of collapse

By Kanchana Kumara Ariyadasa

The suspension bridge over the Amban Ganga in Naula is in a dilapidated condition and the 3,000 families using it fear it could give way soon. Spanning a distance of 300 metres, the bridge is suspended by a single cable and is causing concern to the villagers residing in Alagamuwa, Kadawara and Galgerugolla.

In the event the bridge does give way, villagers would have to travel an additional distance of 36 km to get to their destination. Rising water levels caused by the prevailing heavy rains has made crossing the bridge a distinct danger.

Villagers lamented that not a single official had come to check the condition of the bridge or look into the dangers and fears faced by residents.

To ensure the safety of children, parents are forced to accompany them while crossing the bridge they said. When the matter was raised with the pradeshiya sabha secretary A Sirisena, he said villagers had been warned against using the bridge and said he would be taking action to allay their fears. However villagers said if repairs to the bridge were not attended to immediately it could lead to a serious accident.

They said they planned to meet President Rajapaksa and apprise him of the situation which had arisen.
