Lankans in Oxford want OU chief out

The Oxford University Sri Lanka Society has called for the resignation of the Oxford Union President James Kingston following this week's fiasco in which President Mahinda Rajapaksa was told he couldn’t address the Union to which he was invited, 24 hours before the event.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Society blamed Mr. Kingston for his "highly unbecoming" conduct in bowing to pressure and questioned his unilateral decision to cancel the address by President Rajapaksa.

The Sri Lanka Society was the joint organiser of the event that was scheduled for December 2. The Society states that contrary to the claim made by the Oxford Union in its release explaining the reasons for the cancellation, the Thames valley Police had assured that they had the capacity to police the event. The statement says the Society had planned to present an award to the visiting President at the event which was to be attended by 12 ambassadors, a Cabinet Minister of a foreign country, the Lord Mayor of Oxford and the Vice Chancellor of the University among others.
