Dinamina journalist challenges interdiction

A Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed by a Deputy News Editor of the State-run Dinamina newspaper, over his interdiction on an alleged erroneous headline in a news item, is to be supported in the Supreme Courts on Monday.

The news item related to objections filed on behalf of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, against the presidential election petition filed by Mr Sarath Fonseka. Deputy News Editor Ranjith Padmasiri, in his petition, claims that he is responsible only for editing the news item and not for its headline.

He said that he was informed that the President had been displeased with the headline of the particular news item, and said the reason for the objection to the headline was that it gave the impression that the President had made the application to court in person, .

Mr Padmasiri, in his petition, stated that, despite the fact that he was not directly responsible for the headline, he maintained there was no factual inaccuracy or misrepresentation in the said headline.
He is seeking leave to proceed in his FR petition and a suspension of the interdiction as interim relief.
