For the first time its history, the Sir John Tarbet Junior Athletics Championship has been extended for four days when it is being held for the 42nd occasion beginning from September 12 at Bogambara Stadium in Kandy. This year’s meet will see 4410 athletes from 330 schools taking part at the championships, which is the penultimate for schools athletics.
“For the past four decades the meet was held for three days but this year with the higher number of participation we decided to go for an extra day, which will be continued annually from here on. This is a big achievement for the Sri Lanka Schools Athletic Association (SLSAA),” Anil Weerasinghe, the secretary of SLSAA said at a press conference held in Colombo last Wednesday (7).
Track and field events for the age groups of Under-12, 13, 14 and 15 for girls and boys will be held during the four days which also will see the participation of 26 schools from the North and East provinces for the first time. Over 270 athletes include the new breed of athletes from the once war-torn region of the country. The meet will come to an end on September 15 with a colourful closing ceremony. |
