Southern rally takes centre stage

The Southern Monsoon Rally 2011 well recognised as the journey through the wilderness of the South will rev off on September 24 and will draw to a close on the following day at Polhena in Matara.

The national motor rally which is being held for the 15th occasion is organized by the Southern Motor Sports Club (SMSC). The rally initiated in 1997 will run through the three districts covering Galle, Matara, Ratnapura and Hambantota, promising an aura of excitement.

This year’s rally will wrap a total distance of over 600 kilometers and the entire route is nestled in the midst of the historical surroundings of down south which includes the vast expanse of lush green country side, abundant blue water reservoirs, clear streams, rivers and sea beaches.

The route of the rally is a plan of Andrew Silva who designed the route in the successive previous 14 years. The rally will be separated into three different stages - from Matara to Udawalawa, Udawalawa to Hambantota and Hambantota to Matara - promising a worthy challenge to the competitors.

The Southern Monsoon Rally is considered as the most challenging annual TSD rally available in Sri Lanka and is an event acknowledged by the local competitors as one of the best organized in the country.

So far the organizers have received nearly 40 entries including those of the well known motor sportsmen in the country. According to the SMSC, they are planning to award an array of trophies to the winners of all categories which are proportionate. Prizes will be awarded for winners of each stage of the rally and also has been categorized for novices, pro, cars, jeeps, overall and the first ten overall finishers of the entire rally.
