Rulers of the air conquered the waters yesterday at Bolgoda as Sri Lanka Air Force clinched their first major title in rowing at the 27th Sri Lanka National Rowing Championships 2011.

In their final medals tally the Air Force had two gold, a silver and two bronze to finish on top of the men’s category. They spread their dominance by having the much experienced crews in a spot of bother by winning four major races. The Airmen sealed their mission on water by winning the races of Over-19 Scull, Over-19 Fours, Open Double Sculls and Open Fours.
The continuous dominance of Colombo Rowing Club came to sudden impedance yesterday as they had to be content with the second slot with two golds and a bronze medal. Sri Lanka Navy finished third with three medals which included two silvers and a bronze. S. Thomas’ College claimed a silver medal.
Ladies College clinched the Women’s championship at the 27th Rowing Nationals after competing with four other strong contenders.
The girls of Ladies claimed three gold medals and a bronze to finish with four medals while winning the events of the Under-19 Double Sculls, Under-19 Fours, Open Double Sculls and Open Fours. Colombo Rowing Club clinched the second place winning a gold and a bronze medal. Museaus College claimed three medals, all of them silvers which eventually saw them finish in third place.
Air Force oarsmen further went on to dominate the Over-19 category as they completed with a tally of six medals consisting of a gold, silver and bronze. Sri Lanka Navy was placed second with four medals and University of Moratuwa were third with two medals.
Altogether 101 medals were awarded, which is a massive improvement at rowing. The Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka earlier announced that it had to restrict two events to each competitor as they had received a staggering 300 entries for the first time in history.
