By M. Shamil Amit

The partnership helped Chilaw Marians to amass 410 for 9 after bundling out Moors for a lowly 133.

The pair came together when the Marians were struggling on 59 for 4 and the duo went on to crack career best knocks with Sachith making 140 and Umesh remaining unbeaten on 168. Sachith’s knock had 12 boundaries and two sixes while Umesh slammed eight boundaries and nine sixes.

The opening day’s play was hampered by rain with the match starting only at 2.15 p.m. Moors who took first lease of the wicket struggled to make ends meet.

Though only 40 overs of play was possible for the day the Marian bowling pair of right arm pacie Madusanka Ekanayake and right arm spinner Maduka Liyanapathirana struck with vengeance to send Moors reeling.

Madusanka grabbed five wickets while Maduka captured four wickets at the end of the first day as Moors struggled to 127 for 9. Moors did not last long when play began on day two being able to add only six more runs with Madusanka finishing it off.

Moors (127/9 overnight) 133 (Kasun Madusanka 36: Madushan Ekanayake 6 for 45, Maduka Liyanapathirana 4 for 39)

Chilaw Marians 410 for 9 (Sachith Pathirana 140, Sanath Silva 30, Sandun Weerakkody 22, Umesh Karunaratne 168 n.o.: Lilan Fernando 4 for 66, Navin Kavikara 3 for 53

Ashan Priyanjana and Levan Helambage cracked tons to guide Tamil Union to a strong position against Colts on day two in the other semi final played at the R. Premadasa Stadium.

Ashan slammed 126 with 17 boundaries and two sixes while Levan made an unbeaten 115 inclusive of 16 boundaries and two sixes enabling Tamil Union to make a formidable 360 and in reply Colts, facing one over, were two for no loss.

This semi final encounter is of disadvantage to both the teams due to the fact that no play was possible on the opening day because of wet outfield due to the overnight rain which forced the umpires to call off play.

The finals day’s play today is bound to be interesting. Though Tamil Union has made 360 it could be an insufficient score, unless they take a few wickets in the morning session of play. So the game is wide open yet with only one innings being completed.

Tamil Union 360 (Ashan Priyanjana 126, Dinuk Jayasinghe 41, Pulina Tharanga 25, Levan Helambage 115 n.o.: Chathuranga Kumara 3 for 39, Chathura Peiris 2 for 28, Lakshan Rangika 2 for 60)
