The Killinochchi District Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (KDCCIA) as recently –re-launched with the support of Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL) and the LEEDS project of International Labour Organisation (ILO).
ILO Country Director Donglin Li, FCCISL Senior Vice President Ajith Wattuhewa, Board Member Shiran Karunaratne, Secretary General Dr. Thusitha Tennakoon, Chief Technical Advisor of ILO-LEEDS Project Joseph Connory and M. Ignatious, President of the Killinochchi Chamber were present on the occasion.
Addressing the business community, Mr. Li highlighted the role of local entrepreneurs in reviving the economy and creating more and more opportunities for the local community, specially for female-headed households, disabled persons and youth. He also said that ILO’s LEEDS project which is now implemented in Vavuniya and Killinochchi, is mainly targeting in developing the SMEs and creating opportunities for poor people by increasing the market access by linking them with major value chains.
Killinochchi Chamber President Mr. Ignatious, was optimistic about the future. He said the business community in the north had gone though a very hard time in the past and urged the government to consider a special scheme for Killinochchi and Mullaitivu businesses, specially bank loans at a concessionary rate and flexibility in settling the outstanding loans.
