The Gateway College, Rajagiriya achieved an innovative milestone on October 3, when the students of its History Department presented the 'longest Birthday Card" to the Chairman and founder of the school, R.I.T Alles in honour of his 79th birthday. The school also celebrates its Founder's Day on October 3.
The card, 320 ft in length, colourful, creative and filled with heartfelt wishes, was the handwork of Grades 9, 10 and 11 students of the History Department, who dedicated much of their free time to have the masterpiece completed in just seven days.
It was the students' way of honouring and celebrating the life of Alles, who has been a trailblazer in the Sri Lankan education system. Alles, who is also a former Secretary to the Ministry of Education, founded D.S. Senanayake College in 1967 before going on to found and establish the Gateway College network of schools and vocational institutes.
The birthday card project was initiated by Anthony Chelliah, Head of the History Department of Gateway College.
