Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT), recognised as the leading institute for information technology in Sri Lanka commences the enrolment of their Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) degree programme, a programme which saw almost two-hundred students enrol in its last intake. The three year BEng (Hons) in Electronic Engineering degree will be conducted through SLIIT's affiliation with the prestigious Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) UK.
President and CEO of SLIIT, Professor Lalith Gamage, speaking about the scope of the field of electronic engineering in Sri Lanka, claims that "the current economic climate and future trends will see industries such as global telecommunications, information technology, defence and medical instrumentation experience exponential growth. These industries all require highly qualified electrical engineers and IT professionals, so the demand for professionals with expertise in these areas is rapidly rising. Therefore, we at SLIIT want to provide students with a world class electronic engineering education to prepare them to be the future forces in these industries."
To meet this need, SLIIT is offering a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Electronic Engineering degree, which will be offered in affiliation with SHU, and allows students to complete this course entirely at the SLIIT campus in Malabe, or transfer to SHU in the UK during their final year. Graduates can become electrical or electronic engineers, specialising in the design, implementation and maintenance of electrical systems.
Starting from 2012 SLIIT will be offering a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Systems Engineering of four years duration, and will be offered in association with Curtin University - Western Australia. While the entire course will be conducted at the Malabe Campus, if they so wish, students can transfer to Curtin University - Australia to complete their degree.
One of the fastest growing engineering fields, graduates have the opportunity of becoming professionals within industry's diverse IT sphere. Possible careers include hardware design engineers - planning and designing hardware for computers, Software Engineers - designing and developing software, or even Network Systems Engineers - working to install and implement computer system networks.
These courses are further enriched by the superior quality of educational resources made available to students at SLIIT. "The academic staff conducting these courses is highly qualified and, includes in its number four doctors 21 permanent lecturers and selected visiting staff from industry," said the Dean of Academic Affairs, Dr. Malitha Wijesundara. The facilities available at the campus are also exemplary; SLIIT possesses its own communications, robotics and embedded systems labs, in order to provide students with the hands-on learning experience necessary to be graduates of the highest standard.
Dr. Wijesundara elaborated by stating that "Education does not consist entirely of theory, and we want our students to learn the lessons that can only be derived from real-world experiences. That is why, together with the National Apprentice & Industrial Training Authority (NAITA), we have become the only foreign affiliated university to make 6 month work apprenticeships an integral part of our degree programmes".
SHU, one of SLIIT's long-standing affiliates, is one of the most progressive and innovative universities in the UK and is recognised as a Centre of Excellence for teaching, learning and employability. SHU possesses an exemplary track record for the highest student enrolment of any UK university.
Curtin University, SLIIT's affiliate in the Computer Systems Engineering programme has been working together with SLIIT since 2001 and is a rising star amongst the landscape of Western Australian Universities. A member of the prestigious Australian Technology Network (ATN), Curtin University represents the best in Western Australia's research initiatives amongst tertiary education institutes. Well noted for working closely with the industries in which it offers educational programmes, Curtin is famed for many of the award-winning research studies it has carried out, which have won accolades unmatched by other Western Australian Universities.
SLIIT is a prestigious internationally affiliated educational institute in Sri Lanka. With its main campus situated in Malabe, the Institute has produced over 5000 IT graduates since its Inception and a further 15,000 IT professionals. These exceptionally skilled graduates have made their mark on the emerging Business, IT and Electronic Engineering landscape of Sri Lanka, imbued with the skills and knowledge that come from the calibre of education that SLIIT offers.
