Veteran film director, screenwriter and editor- Titus Thotawatte passed away at a private hospital after a prolonged illness. He was 82.
Mr. Thotawatte struck out as a film director with Chandiya in 1965, starring the late Gamini Fonseka in his first role as a villain in Sinhala cinema.
He later went on to direct and edit 22 films during his long and distinguished contribution to the Sinhala cinema.
He also made a significant contribution to the TV media in Sri Lanka.
Later in the 1980s and 1990s, he dubbed English cartoons such Bugs Bunny and Dr Dolittle into Sinhala. These continue to be aired on Sinhala TV to date. He also created puppet characters such as Eluson.
In 1980, Mr. Thotawatte wrote and directed the popular children’s movie Handaya, which was adjudged Best Picture at the Sarasaviya Film Festival.
He was a past pupil of Ananda College, Colombo, and Matara Technical College. |
