Western Province South bounces back

Western Province South bouncing back from their only defeat of the tournament against Central Province in the first round, made positive changes to score a comfortable win by 74 runs and clinch the Under-17 Inter Provincial cricket championship. The tournament concluded with the final between the two sides which was played at the Colts Cricket Ground in Colombo on October 11. The Western Province South team comprising cricketers from leading schools from Colombo South and suburbs played five matches before the final including four first round games. They beat Wayamba, Uva and Kalutara but lost to Central province in the preliminary rounds. The Western Province South cricketers beat the Southerners in the semifinal before playing in the final against Central.

Western Province South opting to bat first scored 194 with Lahiru Milantha top scoring, 53 but not for the efforts of off-spinner Julian de Zilva who captured impressive figures of 5 wickets for 20 runs their win would not have been a possibility. Chasing 198 runs in 50 overs, Central Province were restricted to 120. Binura Fernando assisted de Zilva to complete with figures of 3 for 18. -
