The initiative for the establishment was of the "Crime Prevention Association" of the village, under the guidance of Ven. Rathanapala thero. Then, the school housed 24 students.
On 26th June, 1929, the school was relocated to the current location, altering its name to "Kumari Viduhala". In 1971, it changed to "Maha Maya Balika Kanishta Viduhala", and finally the current name "Maha Maya Balika Maha Viduhala" was dubbed in 1980. With the setting up of Advanced Level Science section, the school was upgraded to a grade 1AB school. At present, the school nourishes a student body of over 2100.
