Prince of Wales' College Moratuwa and Girls' High School Mt. Lavinia emerged champions respectively in the boys' and girls' categories in the first-ever Inter-School Handball Tournament which was held last weekend at Wijerama Mawatha in Colombo.
Prince of Wales' beat D.S. Senanayake College in the boys' Under-19 in the Cup final while Isipathana secured the third place. Royal College Colombo were the champions of the Plate segment where the 'B' team of the Cambrians emerged runners-up. Maradankadawela National School won the third place.
In the Under-15 age category Prince of Wales' continued their dominance to clinch the Cup championship. They beat Kuliyapitiya Central in the final while Royal Panadura was placed third. Isipathana won the Plate championship after managing to beat Homagama Central in the final as St. Anthony's National School managed to win the third place in that segment. Royal Colombo clinched the Bowl championship beating Walagamba Central in the final as Mahamathya 'B' was placed third.
Girls' Under-19 Cup champions, Girls High School Mt. Lavinia beat Anula Vidyalaya in the final while Ananda Balika was placed third. Devi Balika Vidyalaya secured the Plate championship beating Buddhist Ladies College in the final. Good Shepherd Convent was placed third. Dharmapala Pannipitiya beat Dharmaraja Meegoda in the Bowl final while Homagama Central was placed at third.
Good Shepherd Convent won the Cup championship in the Under-15 Girls' category as Buddhist Ladies emerged runner-up. Maddebedde BMV Matale was placed third. Devi Balika Vidyalaya beat Boralesgamuwa MV in the Plate final while the Devi Balika 'B' side was placed third. Sunethra Devi BMV won the Bowl championship beating Homagama Central while Wijewardena MV Boralesgamuwa earned the third place.
The inaugural Inter-School Handball tournament was held on November 3 and 4, at the D.S. Senanayake College Sports Complex at Wijerama Mawatha, in Colombo with the participation of over 1080 players from 36 schools who eventually became historical partners of this event.
This was the first occasion Sri Lanka Schools Handball Association (SLSHA) organized an event after their formation July 4 this year, which completes an exact duration of four months. A total of 72 teams representing 36 schools took part in the tournament. The SLSHA and Ministry of Education hope to promote the sport further with coaching camps for the players and coaches.
