Greeting the visitor with the pleasing sight of a row of tall willows, WP/KE Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya in Kiribathgoda was the first Buddhist Girls' school to be established in Kelaniya. At the young age of 34, the school stands as a beacon in the Gampaha district, lighting the educational zone of Kelaniya.

Initiated on February 1, 1977 under Mrs. Amara Wickramasinghe, the school had comprised of 34 students and 07 teachers. Today, however, the school facilitates both primary and secondary education in the Sinhala medium, as well as in the English medium, to a student body of over 3000. At present, the school comprises of an academic staff of 150.
The school has numerous facilities to offer, including a well-stocked library; separate laboratory facilities for Ordinary Level and Advanced Level students; two state-of-the-art computer laboratories; a separate reading room for the primary section; a language centre; television and DVD facilities for each class room in grades 2 and 3; and a swimming pool - the first in a girls' school in the district- that serves other schools as well as the Veheradevians.

Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya claims to gift to society young women with "virtue, wisdom and courage": the school's motto. It has a remarkable record in academic as well as co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.
The school has managed to produce anIsland first in the grade 5 scholarship, G.C.E. O/L examination and G.C.E. A/L examination on a number of occasions. In 2010 alone, 98% of the students who sat the O/L qualified to sit the Advanced Level and 76% of the A/L students gained university entrance.
In the non-academic field, the achievements of Veheradevians have been monumental. National places have been secured by the school each year in Aesthetics, English Day competitions, Sinhala Day competitions as well as in Home Science competitions. A Veheradevian represented Sri Lanka in the SAARC debating competition (English medium) in 2007.
The Girl Guides of the school have won the Presidential Bronze medal and have participated in the Asian Corporation Girl Guides Conference.
The school's Cadet Corps was placed 2nd in the Gampaha district, in 2009.

The school's Computer laboratory was listed in the top 20 Excellence Awards under the SEMP project to select outstanding school computer
laboratories. In the sports field, the Veheradevians have excelled internationally too.
In the year 2010, Under 19 Kumithe 1st place in the S.M.A. Karate
tournament, held in Singapore, was awarded to a Veheradevian. Apart
from that, the students in Karate, Taekwondo and Aerobics gymnastics
win national level awards each year. In swimming, the school is the
reigning champion in the Gampaha district swimming championship for the
6th consecutive year. Numerous victories are recorded in track and field, netball, table tennis, badminton and other collective sports,producing national colours winners yearly.

Striving towards a virtuous life as depicted in their motto, the students engage in religious activities including sil programs, meditation programs and alms giving throughout the year. They have provided aid to the students of Sinhapurayaya 13 Vidyalaya and have built a house for a disabled war-hero in Matale.
The school boasts of over 37 societies and activities including separate speech and debate societies for junior and senior students, a media unit, science society, history and archaeology society, photography society, IT society, commerce society, aesthetic circle,
A Sinhala literary association, kitty program, astronomy society, English literary association and a Model United Nations organization. Being pillars of strength in the success of the school is the present Principal Mrs. A.S. Abeyrathne, the Old Girls' Association and the School Development Society. Excelling in the academic and non-academic fields, Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya continues on her path of glory, heralding greatness in the years to come.
