Gateway College, Kandy Debate team comprising Arshana Rajadurai, Brindha Ganeshan, Minuri Dharmasena and Samantha Modder won the championship for the second successive year
The K.M. De Lanerolle Memorail Trophy Debate competition is annually organized by Kingswood College and is the main highlight of the Hill Country’s debating calendar.
The competition was held for the seventh time with 12 schools participating in competition and the finals between.
Gateway College Kandy and Colombo International School Kandy held on 1st November 2011.
This year, Gateway College Kandy progressed onto the finals after beating Girls High School Kandy and Trinity College Kandy at the quarter-finals and semi-final stages respectively. At the finals between Gateway College Kandy Team and Colombo International School, Kandy, Gateway College became champions with a 3-0 unanimous vote in their favour.
In addition to the much – coveted All-Island trophy, the team also bagged three other awards. The first speaker for Gateway, Arshana Rajadurai and their fourth speaker Samantha Modder were among the best three speakers of the competition where Arshana won the 1st runners up to the best speaker award and Samantha won the 2nd runners up to the best speaker award. Samantha Modder, in addition, won the special prize awarded to the Best Fourth Speaker.
