Badulla Madya Maha Vidyalaya (Badulla Central College) is in the heart of the Uva, surrounded by fabulous landscape, it has enriched the community by providing quality education. The academic staff of 135 is headed by the Principal, S.H.K.Alwis.
Badulla Central College was established in 1929 as the first Central College in Uva Province by its first principal M. Rathnayake. It was first known as St. Bede’s College, under the administration of a English Missionary. Later, its name was changed to Welagedara Maha Vidyalaya. On January 1, 1939, its name was changed to Badulla Central College. In 1944, on Dr. C.C. Kannangara’s initiatives, the British decided to establish “Central Colleges”, with the idea of Free Education to all the children. With the passage of time, many students who passed Grade 5 scholarship examination entered Badulla Central College for their secondary education. Gradually, Badulla Central College became one of the best schools with the largest number of students successful at the GCE (OL) and GCE (AL).
Today, there are about 3,500 students acquiring receiving quality education under the guidance of 135 teachers. The present principal, S.H.K. Alwis said, “The main goal, as facilitators of education for tomorrow, is to inculcate the students with skills, knowledge and attitude to suit the next fifty years.”
The school provides many facilities including the Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Unit, Bio Science & Physical Science Unit, Physical Education Unit, Library Unit, Commerce Unit, Art Unit for the to enhance the knowledge of the students.
The GCE (OL) brings pride to the school, with outstanding achievement of more than 95% qualifying for the Advanced Level. In 2010, 97% of the students got through the GCE (OL) examination, with 11 of them securing 9 A’s.
At the GCE (AL), a significant number of students gain university entrance. In 2010, 52 students entered the Universities, while 17 students secured 3 A’s in all four streams.
The school has produced many outstanding personalities such as Dr. Premasiri Jayasinghe, Doctorate in Medicine, Dr. Sisira Kumara Balawardena, one of the heads of the Cancer Research Unit, Prof. Nevil Perera, Kidney Transplant Specialist, Feroze Ismail, Chief Architect for Sultan of Brunei, Mrs. Anoja Weerasinghe, famous Sinhala actress and many Doctors, Engineers, Accountants, Lawyers and Bankers.
The School Science and Mathematics team attended the International Olympiad Science and Mathematics competition and won silver in 2009.
Sports is given a prominent place and students are now involved in an array of sports including Cricket, Badminton, Football, Athletics, Carrom and Chess. The Badminton team, Carrom team and the Chess team were champions and the Cricket team and the Football team were runners-up in Uva province this year.
Since 2008, the annual Big Match against Badulla Saraswathy Central College is the only Big Match in Sri Lanka played between a Sinhala and a Tamil school.
The Buddhist Society’s primary objective is to develop children with high ethics and create a peaceful society. They organize the annual “Bodhi Pooja”, “Seela Programmes” and Devotional Songs to motivate students in religious activities.
A book of poems, “BEYOND THE HORIZON” was launched by YEP (Young English Poets) of Badulla Central College in 2009.
There are a variety of associations functioning with great efficiency and productivity. These associations help in creating new skills, leadership, personality, positive attitude and many others among the students. Literary association, Theatre and Drama association, Music society, Girl Guides Company, Scouts, Agricultural Unit and Special Learning Unit are some of them.
The Girl Guides Company of Badulla Central College has a long history, dating back to the fifties. The ICT Society was started in 2007 and from its inception, the students participated in various Software competitions. Through these activities, they gained knowledge which empowered them to face the rapidly developing world of technology.
The Central College students shine also in Language day, Dancing, Art, Band competitions and winning Provincial and National level medals for the school.
Under the guidance of the present Principal, the school stands out as the best school in the Uva Province. The future of the school for generations to come is that of a shining example. -Sujitha Miranda
