Seven-member House committee to improve discipline, security within

Sequel to unruly scenes during President Rajapaksa’s Budget speech last month

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa has appointed a seven-member committee to recommend ways to improve discipline, as well as maintain security within the parliament chamber, in the wake of the unruly scenes that took place during the President’s Budget speech last month.

The Committee headed by Minister D.E.W. Gunasekera, will comprise both government and opposition members, Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody announced in Parliament yesterday.Other members of the Committee are Ministers P. Dayaratna, Anura Priyadharshana Yapa and Rauff Hakeem, and MPs Karu Jayasuriya, Wijeyadasa Rajapaksha and R.Sampanthan.

Unruly scenes arose in the House when President Mahinda Rajapaksa was presenting the Budget on November 21, with ruling party legislators and opposition members coming to blows, during which, books and water bottles were flung across the floor of the House.

Earlier, Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena was suspended from the House for a week, after it was found that he had flung a water bottle which fell a few feet away from the President.
