Attempt to probe COPE findings shot down

An attempt by Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga to move a motion in Parliament, to appoint a select committee to look into the affairs of seven State-owned institutions identified as loss-making by COPE, was aborted after Deputy Speaker Chaminda Weerakkody ruled that proper notice of the motion had not been given to the Secretary General of Parliament.

The motion signed by Mr Amaratunga and UNP MPs Dayasiri Jayasekera and Dr Jayalath Jayawardena, want the select committee to look into the finances of these institutions, and recommend ways to prevent them continuing to operate in the same manner.

These institutions include the Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital, Samurdhi Authority, Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, SriLankan Airlines, Mihin Air, Sri Lanka Ports Authority and Road Development Authority.
