John Carter: Planets at war

Hollywood action adventure movie ‘John Carter’ set on the mysterious planet of Barsoom (Mars) is now being screened at Liberty cinema, Colombo.

Filmmaker Andrew Stanton directed the movie based on11-volume Barsoom series of classic novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose adventures served as inspiration for many directors.

The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins).

Carter, a Civil War veteran who in 1868 was trying to live a normal life, is "asked" by the Army to join. But he refuses so he is locked up. He escapes and is pursued. Eventually they run into some Indians and there's a gunfight. Carter seeks refuge in a cave.

While there he encounters someone who is holding some kind of medallion. When Carter touches it, he finds himself in a place where he can leap incredible heights, among other things. He later encounters beings he has never seen before. Later he meets a woman who helps him to discover that he is on Mars. And he learns there's some kind of unrest going on.

In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

Produced by Jim Morris, Colin Wilson and Lindsey Collins, the cast includes Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciarán Hinds, Dominic West and James Purefoy. ‘John Carter’ is a Walt Disney distribution.
