Sri Lanka Tourism gets ‘Googled’

Google will be the key marketing tool for Sri Lanka Tourism that is expected to put the country on the map for the next best tourist destination from June 15, SLT officials said. The campaign would enhance visibility to bring new tourists by end 2012, develop a number one online marketing campaign globally and reach untapped demand, the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) said.

In this respect, the Bureau expects to attract high net worth tourists from new markets in the Middle East, Russia, Japan, Korea and India. In addition they intend on attracting repeat business from established markets like the US and the EU.

Google’s key options of search and display platforms would be widely used in this regard, with the former expected to expose advertisements to travellers checking for Sri Lanka related keywords.
This would highlight the country’s unique selling points namely the diverse wildlife, mountains, waterfalls and tea estates, the release said.

Text advertisements and banners on Sri Lanka would be displayed on tourist related content and websites for example Lonely Planet, BBC, TripAdvisor among many others. Moreover, the release notes that this is likely to trigger the much earned media coverage worldwide, expected to propel a word of mouth effect, driving increased coverage, recognition and attracting more visitors to the island nation.

It was noted that this promotional campaign would be effective in that the advertisements would run next to relevant queries and content. For instance when a user searches for “Sri Lanka Holiday” or reads an article about visiting the country, Google would run the Bureau advertisements.
