Sri Lankan and Vietnamese governments are engaged in a joint tourism promotional campaign encouraging travel between the two countries. In this respect, the Vietnam Embassy in Colombo recently conducted a travel promotion for the tourism industry in the country to create awareness of business opportunities looking towards increasing its visitors. This was the first ever Vietnam Tourism promotional event in Sri Lanka, Vietnam Ambassador Tong Sen Tan told the meeting.
He observed that with the development of the Vietnam economy they intend to encourage travel to the country as this is a key revenue generator for its economy. Vietnam is currently targeting US$1 billion worth of foreign investments for a sector that is also supported through government investments as well, they said. Vietnam boasts of beaches, heritage, national parks, hot water springs and the world renowned site Halong Bay in addition to finding war relics during a visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels. The latter site was visited by President Mahinda Rajapaksa as well during his visit to the country, it was pointed out.
Tours to some of the major cities of Vietnam namely, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Hue was possible while also stopping for food, shopping and interestingly water puppetry.
Getting there is possible on Tiger Airways, Singapore Airlines and Air Asia although no direct flights have been established, the ambassador said.
Several tour operators made presentations to the local industry on the sights and sounds and options available to conduct tours in Vietnam.
