Police today arrested an individual who had allegedly solicited bribes to facilitate people to obtain the Covishield vaccine at a vaccination centre in Maradana.
Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the Western Province Intelligence Division had received information that a person was obtaining money from individuals at a vaccination centre in Maradana to obtain the vaccine. They had conducted surveillance of the area thereafter and had observed that a person was collecting money from people after promising to get them vaccinated.
Police deployed a decoy and arrested the suspect while he was in the act of obtaining Rs 1000 as a bribe to get the Covishield vaccine. A sum of Rs 20, 000 was recovered from the suspect's possession. Police believe the money had been collected from individuals to obtain the vaccine, the police spokesman said.
The 40-year-old suspect has been identified as an office assistant of the Medical Officer of Health (MoH) office at the CMC. Maradana police are conducting further investigations. (PCK)
