The Department of Registration of Persons (DRP) has launched a special project aimed at verifying National Identity Card (NIC) details online.
The new project will be in operation at Government offices, statutory boards, banks and financial institutions, telecom service providers and insurance companies. With the consent of the customer, institutions where the project is in operation will conduct data authentification and verification of the customer's NIC details online, Commissioner General of Registration of Persons Viyani Gunathilake said.
A number of institutions, including Colombo Stock Exchange, Department of Immigration and Emigration, Bank of Ceylon, Nation's Trust Bank, Sampath Bank, HSBC and State Bank of India have already signed agreements to obtain the data authentification and verification service. Agreements for the same are also to be signed in future with a host of other institutions including the Department of Pensions, Sri Lanka Customs, Sri Lanka Ports Authority and National Lotteries Board.
The project is being implemented with the assistance of the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) and will help in preventing data duplication and financial fraud, the Commissioner General said, adding that the DRP was ready to lend assistance to all agencies to verify identities of individuals more correctly and reliably, thus enabling a more efficient and streamlined public service.
