The Energy Ministry has decided to go ahead with the PUCSL recommendation of reducing the electricity tariff by an average of 20 per cent, Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody said today.
The Minister in a statement clarified the position after his Ministry issued a statement yesterday that Finance Ministry advice would be needed to implement the PUCSL proposal.
However, the PUCSL insisted that the reduction was coming into effect from midnight yesterday.
The public had already welcomed the decision of the PUCSL, but the statement issued by the Media Secretary of the Energy Ministry had caused the confusion.
Minister Jayakody in a statement issued today said believes that this measure will benefit the country's hotel industry and other sectors. He further stated that this decision will provide significant relief to the citizens.
He emphasized that the government is committed to managing the challenges and difficulties while ensuring relief for the public.
