The government has decided to increase the annual festival allowance granted to workers of state plantation companies in view of Deepavali.
The allowance is granted to workers of plantation companies coming under the State Plantations Corporation, Elkaduwa Plantations and Janatha Estates Development Board.
Accordingly, the earlier festival allowance of Rs. 10, 000 has been increased to Rs. 20, 000.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Plantation Industries, Ministry Secretary Prabath Chandrakeerthi said that the decision to increase the special festival allowance was taken considering the cost of living owing to the country's economic situation and the drop in purchasing power of plantation workers.
Mr Chandrakeerthi also offered his best wishes to the upcountry Tamil community and the Tamil community in general for the Deepavali Festival.
