Professional Trade unions to meet the President next week

News

The Professionals trade union alliance temporarily called off their union action today morning as they received a positive response from the presidential secretariat.

They have called a meeting among the stake holders to discuss their future trade union action as well as to set up a time frame for their action plan.

The spokesperson for the Government Medical officers Association (GMOA), Dr Chamil Wijesinghe said that they stake holders of the Professionals Trade union are currently holding a meeting to discuss their future trade union action as well as to set up a time frame for their action plan.

He added that they halted the strike as the President Secretariat in writing had said that the president wishes to have a dialogue with them early next week.

He said that though they halted their action the Federation of University Teachers Association (FUTA) are continuing their strikes and have even arrange protests for the second consecutive day.

The Ceylon electricity Boards Technical Engineers and Superintendents union’s Joint Secretary Nalin Liyanapatabandi explained that only some unions have temporarily halted their union actions as the president secretary has written to them saying that the government would discuss their demands with the International Monitory Fund (IMF) and provide them some relief.

“Even though the government has not promised us of directly providing a solution for demands, they have indicated that they would at least provide them relief by discussing with the IMF”, he said.

The 40 trade unions representing sectors such as health, power and energy, education, ports, postal services crippled the day to day activities and caused inconvenience to the general public.

The railway service too were crippled as the Train operators too engaged in the strike action yesterday. Though the strike was called off by today morning there was a shortage of trains causing inconvenience to the commuters even though the operations resumed.
