Sri Lanka has achieved the 9th ranking in the BBC Travel Guide’s inaugural list of top
destinations. According to the BBC, “From its misty hilltop tea plantations and roaming
wild elephants to its ancient temples and rolling surf, Sri Lanka is a country that ticks
many boxes.”
The BBC further praised Sri Lanka for its natural beauty, highlighted by misty mountains
and lush plantations. They noted that the island has recently opened the 300 km Pekoe
Trail, which takes hikers through tea plantations and rural villages in the Central
Highlands.
Additionally, before this ranking, Lonely Planet recognized the Colombo-Badulla train
journey as the seventh best in the world.
BBC commended Sri Lanka for achieving 9th place despite facing bankruptcy in 2022.
The country was also recognized for its Good Travel Seal initiative, which celebrates
local businesses that adhere to sustainable practices.
