Two Prison Officers attached to the Bogambara Prison have been hospitalised with serious injuries after being attacked by an inmate while transporting him to the Batticaloa Prison
Prisons Commissioner and Spokesman Gamini B. Dissanayake stated that the inmate at the Bogambara Prison was being taken under guard to today to the Batticaloa Prison in order to produce him for a court case being heard at the Kalmunai High Court.
While being transported in this manner, the inmate allegedly attacked the two Prison Officers, including a Sergeant with his handcuffs at Ududumbara. The two injured officers were admitted to the Ududumbara Hospital before being transffered to the Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo National Hospital owing to their condition being serious.
A team of officers were dispatched from the Bogambara Prison to the Ududumbara Police Station to secure the inmate and to bring him back to the Bogambara Prison, whereupon statements into the incident were recorded. The inmate was thereafter transferred to the Batticaloa Prison to be produced in court.
The Prisons Spokesman added that the Bogambara Prison has launched an inquiry into the incident and that a police complaint has also been made with regard to the attack on the officers.
